Welcome to What Now
“What now?” Or maybe: “What NOW?!” Add whatever inflection best works for you.
When I started this strip in the Spring of 2025, I didn’t have any big plans. I was just responding to current events as they happened. Fascists overtook the U.S. government, universities and corporate media bent the knee, and a xenophobic secret police corps invaded communities to round up undocumented migrant workers and disappear them in an American gulag archipelago. That followed on the heels of two years of genocide in Gaza. Either late stage capitalism has entered its final act or we’re on the cusp of a serious transformation in society.
Or it will be a wet fart. A dangerous one, to be sure.
So I have had a hard time focusing on Fetch, especially the Otherworldly Goods story line running for the past few years. As longtime readers know, and as new visitors can see, Fetch has always been political, either explicitly or by inference. While the Otherworldly Goods story will comment on current events sometimes, the main focus of the story is Fetch’s adventures in the Otherworld. As a longtime political cartoonist (see the In Contempt archive for a sense of that history), I start getting itchy when I haven’t responded to our insane politics for more than a few months.
And thus What Now was born. My plan is to publish a new comic strip at least once a month, if not more, depending on how inspired (read: freaked out, angry, horrified) I am at the time. This site includes some strips from December 2024 that I created in the same frame of mind. I predict there will be times when all I am drawing are these strips. Nonetheless the main plan is to toggle between What Now and Fetch until society collapses or the sun goes supernova or I fall over dead on my iPad. Whichever comes first.
Enjoy!
